If you are passionate about dance or just want to try something new, come to a practice and see if you like it. Practices are held on Monday evenings in Port Moody. We are always looking for enthusiastic ladies eager to learn something new, stay fit and have fun! We are a group of volunteers and there is no cost to participate, just come out and be prepared to have a great time and make some wonderful friendships!
Can I come to a practice to try it out and see if I like it?
Of course you can! Contact our manager Sally, to let her know that you are interested in attending a practice. There's no commitment and you can attend when you can, though regular attendance is important for learning dances and becoming performance ready.
Who can join?
Women who are 19 years of age or over are welcome to join! The ability to keep time with music is helpful but no dance experience is required. Our group is made up of over 20 dancers and while some of the members' previous experiences include dance and aerobics, most of us are there for a great workout, a chance to perform and to have fun with a fantastic group of ladies!
When and where do you practice?
We practice from September until the beginning of July and take a break over summer. Contact Sally for location and address!
How much does it cost to join?
There is no fee to join the group. Just enthusiasm and the willingness to participate!
Who is in charge?
Sally is the manager of the group and is also one of the choreographers. She has experience in tap, jazz and has also performed in many musical theatre productions and has been with this group for 18 years.
Marcella is the group's treasurer, secretary and dance warm up instructor extraordinaire! She has been a part of Golden Spike Can Can Dancers for 23 years.
How long will it take to learn the routines? When will I be ready to perform?
Everyone learns at a different pace but you could learn a routine in as little as 2–4 months. New dancers will learn one routine first and become comfortable with it before learning another routine. We have dancers of all sorts of varying levels and there is something for everyone. We even have some ladies who prefer not to perform and they volunteer in our booth at Golden Spike Days and at other various events throughout the year like parades and non-dancing public appearances.
When you are ready to perform, we will let you know and then you will be able to sign up for upcoming gigs.
What about the cancan dress and shoes?
You do not need to have your own dress right away. Dresses can be expensive so, for new dancers, there are loaner dresses available that can be borrowed for gigs. Because we do not make any money for ourselves from our performances, dresses are the dancer's expense and most of the ladies make their own (don't worry, we have patterns!). Dresses can also be made by a seamstress. The cost of making or buying a dress can range anywhere from $150–$300. Before you make or buy your own dress, talk to Sally. She will inform you about the patterns, colours, accessories and shoes that will be required.
What should I bring to practice?
Wear runners, or dance shoes if you have them, and comfortable clothes for dancing (no jeans). Bring your water bottle, your energy and you're set!
